I've been crocheting since I was 5.. well, I should say I started learning when I was 5! My Mommom had the patience of a Saint! She started me out with granny squares (mine looked more like parallelograms!). God Bless her.. she never criticized me.. only encouraged me.. which made me want to do better.. and thank goodness.. I eventually did! :o)
After MANY years of crocheting scarves and afghans.. I never read a pattern, I only ever made up things as I went along.. and then reversed it when I was half-way through my project.. I still made mistakes, but my Mommom used to remind me that God was the only One that could ever make anything PERFECT!
Mommom has been gone for a long time now, and I still find myself trying to make her proud.. as my hands have aged, and have acquired some wrinkles.. they're beginning to remind me of hers.. I was always amazed how her hook used to glide through her yarn, so effortlessly.. I would become mesmerized watching her! Now.. when I crochet, I sometimes catch my granddaughter watching me.. and I wonder if she thinks the same thing about me.. I hope one day I can teach her!
My Mommom never got to see any of the patterns I've made now... she passed many years ago.. my Mom used to tell me how she wished her Mother (my Mommom) could see what I had done.. and that she'd be very proud of me.. Now, my Mom and sister have both passed too.. so I have a Trio of in Heaven, that hopefully can see that I've started to crochet & design again... and I hope I'm making all 3 proud of me!
So, what I'd like to know... is how YOU learned.. why do you crochet (or knit, or any other craft!).. and how long have you been at it?
